Summary

Acclaimed author Gloria Chao creates real-world magic in this luminous romance about teens who devote themselves to granting other people's wishes, but are too afraid to let themselves have their own hearts' desires—each other。

Liya and Kai had been best friends since they were little kids, but all that changed when a humiliating incident sparked The Biggest Misunderstanding Of All Time—and they haven’t spoken since。

Then Liya discovers her family's wishing lantern store is struggling, and she decides to resume a tradition she had with her beloved late grandmother: secretly fulfilling the wishes people write on the lanterns they send into the sky。 It may boost sales and save the store, but she can't do it alone 。 。 。 and Kai is the only one who cares enough to help。

While working on their covert missions, Liya and Kai rekindle their friendship—and maybe more。 But when their feuding families and their changing futures threaten to tear them apart again, can they find a way to make their own wishes come true?

I can honestly say I know why it’s not one of my favorites by Gloria Chao。 I really don’t like miscommunication tropes。 If that’s a trope you like, I highly recommend it。The characters were adorable and likable。 Watching Kai and Liya develop into their own people is so nice and their struggles are so heartbreaking。 It also does well with dealing with grief and moving forward。

Love, Love, Loved this new book by Gloria Chao! Such a sweet story about family, culture and finding your place with the people who love you。 I have liked her books in the past but really loved this one especially。 I might be slightly biased living so close to Chicago。 I loved we saw the story from the perspective of both of the main characters and even though they had some problems along the way were willing to stick it out together。 I also greatly appreciated that even though everything didn't Love, Love, Loved this new book by Gloria Chao! "Friends to Lovers" is the ultimate romance trope to read in the young adult genre。 It’s just as sweet when you discover how much you fall in love with your closest friends。 And it’s even sweeter when you reunite with your closest friends as well。 It’s something Liya and Kai will discover as they begin to talk again after so many months。Liya and Kai have always been friends, until a few months ago。 The reason behind their noncommunication with each other is a miscommunication between them。 It’s "Friends to Lovers" is the ultimate romance trope to read in the young adult genre。 It’s just as sweet when you discover how much you fall in love with your closest friends。 And it’s even sweeter when you reunite with your closest friends as well。 It’s something Liya and Kai will discover as they begin to talk again after so many months。Liya and Kai have always been friends, until a few months ago。 The reason behind their noncommunication with each other is a miscommunication between them。 It’s expected since they are both teenagers and expect all of their issues to be bigger than they are。It’s a bit harsh to say, but this book is a bit too young for me to read。 It’s a better fit for younger adults。 They will have a better reading experience than I did。 I found the characters a bit too childish about their miscommunications among themselves。 They could ignore the problem if they only communicated with each other。While I was struggling with the characters as a whole, I enjoyed the representation of grief。 It was beautifully written in this book。 It truly represents how much grief can affect everyone。 Not everyone goes through the same process; it’s different for everyone。 And it’s something Liya will realize as she processes her grandmother's death。 。。。more

This book was delightful and full of hope as you follow Kai and Liya’s journey to make wishes come true (and maybe even their own 😉💜)。 I also really loved the friendship that both characters shared throughout the story! If you need a huggable story that will leave you happy and hopeful, look no further!

This was so cute and packed full of Chinese culture: I loved and craved Mooncakes while reading this and now I really want to attend a lantern festival!Kai and Liya always had each other’s best interests at heart despite their initial miscommunication, and I really enjoyed seeing how they built their relationship back up from awkward to back to friends to romantic interests。 The feeling of their small town was so magical!

I love Gloria Chao and everything she writes。 This was amazing。 This was a great retelling of Romeo and Juliet, I loved the relationship between Kai and Liya, the way they know each other so well but are learning about each other more every day。 I loved how close the community that Kai and Liya are part of is。 This was a sweet and fun book!

When You Wish Upon a Lantern was a beautiful YA novel and one I hope to share with many people。 Gloria Chao did an amazing job of representing falling in love with your best friend at a young age, dealing with the awkwardness of the teenage years and how what we think others think or feel about us is not always the case。 She also covers the strain families feel when they lose someone dear, when parents try to protect their children from the grownup issues and children want to be apart of the sol When You Wish Upon a Lantern was a beautiful YA novel and one I hope to share with many people。 Gloria Chao did an amazing job of representing falling in love with your best friend at a young age, dealing with the awkwardness of the teenage years and how what we think others think or feel about us is not always the case。 She also covers the strain families feel when they lose someone dear, when parents try to protect their children from the grownup issues and children want to be apart of the solution and be included。 Gloria also covers family feuds in the family and with other families, traditions that span generations and the importances of keeping these beliefs and traditions alive for all the generations to come。 Gloria manages to cover all these topics at once in such a beautiful story of friendship, family and love。 As this is a YA love story, it was kept perfectly PG13 if this is a concern you have for your child and what they read。 。。。more

(Feb 2023) RTC, gotta stop crying first。- - - I saw a few people DNF this book immediately because it had miscommunication trope, so I was so scared to pick it up。 I'm happy to say that it's not even close to miscommunication - more like poor timing。 You immediately know why Liya and Kai are somewhat estranged, and it's honestly an entertaining hiccup that led them to where they are。 The only thing that blip resulted in, really, was mutual pining, which was adorable。This story is a story of love (Feb 2023) RTC, gotta stop crying first。- - - I saw a few people DNF this book immediately because it had miscommunication trope, so I was so scared to pick it up。 I'm happy to say that it's not even close to miscommunication - more like poor timing。 You immediately know why Liya and Kai are somewhat estranged, and it's honestly an entertaining hiccup that led them to where they are。 The only thing that blip resulted in, really, was mutual pining, which was adorable。This story is a story of love - a dash of Romeo and Juliet (or Zhinü and Niulang) mixed with friends-to-lovers - but, as a whole, it's a story about history, immigration, Chinese/Taiwanese culture, community, and tradition。 Liya and Kai bop through the story as wish granters in an attempt to save Liya's family's store。 Through their wish granting, they learn more about their community, people's histories, and their immigration stories。 I teared up a lot throughout this book both because of heartfelt, warm moments, as well as moments of grief, not just for the dead, but for the lonely and the lost。I also related a lot to Liya's unnamed anxiety and germaphobia。 The way that old memories haunted her and impacted her actions was so similar to my experience with life。 Like, this story didn't have to come at me like that。 The whole storyline with Stephanie was so perfectly executed and I loved the outcome of it all。 This book was so beautiful, and honestly felt like a warm hug for the most part。 Gloria Chao hits it out of the park once more! Feuding family love stories have been around for a long time — Romeo and Juliet, anyone? So, to make a story stand out in this genre, authors have to find something unique。 In the case of When You Wish Upon a Lantern, it’s secretly granting wishes。It’s a premise that not only works, but feels believable and achievable。Author Gloria Chao’s writing has an almost cinematic feel to it。 You can practically see the lanterns floating across the screen。 And the book’s beautiful cover truly helps set the Feuding family love stories have been around for a long time — Romeo and Juliet, anyone? Ok I loved this book! First of all there was a part that reminded me of the scene in Tangled which is one of my faves! I love the romance in this book, the theme of wishes and hope。 There was romance, growing up, learning to deal with grief, thoughts of first love, learning to move on from things。 With a bit of Romeo and Juliet vibes。 Literally read this in one sitting it was so good!

I have always been fascinated about stories of inserting a written memo/wish, lighting up and flying the lantern to the unknown sky。 This book is so cute that I wish I could see this made into a movie or even be produced into a K-drama someday。 I think Liya is so lucky to have known Kai even though they had their fall out。 This book is about friendship, first sweet love, families’ issues, disagreements and how to maneuver lost loves。 I think this book is a 5⭐️ read。

This book was beautiful! The Chinese culture sprinkled throughout was so nice because I didn’t know about a lot of the traditional Chinese festivals and it really felt like I was there enjoying the festivals with the characters。 I listened to the audiobook and I highly recommend! The narrators are great! Liya and Kai were both really well rounded characters and it was really nice to be in both of their heads so we could hear both sides of the story。 4。5 out of 5 stars!

4。5/5。 I loved this book! Such a beautiful love letter to Chinese American culture。 The couple is extremely sweet, and both are very well written。 When You Wish Upon A Lantern is the perfect friends to lovers book。 And I was lucky enough to get to read it starting on the very day it was published thanks to my elibrary! It is a YA novel, though, as the main characters are both 17, so just be aware of that if it isn't your thing。 4。5/5。 I loved this book! This was a really sweet book。I’m not sure where to start with my description since there’s a few interesting things happening in the storyline。Liya is mourning her grandmother and her parents barely mention her。 She’s trying to save the family store because she’s seen past due notices on bills and she feels like her parents don’t care。 She’s also continuing her grandmother’s tradition of granting wishes secretly。 Liya is also trying to deal with her feelings for her best friend Kai who she hasn’ This was a really sweet book。I’m not sure where to start with my description since there’s a few interesting things happening in the storyline。Liya is mourning her grandmother and her parents barely mention her。 She’s trying to save the family store because she’s seen past due notices on bills and she feels like her parents don’t care。 She’s also continuing her grandmother’s tradition of granting wishes secretly。 Liya is also trying to deal with her feelings for her best friend Kai who she hasn’t talked to since she embarrassed herself around him。 Her parents also don’t approve of Kai because they don’t like his family。 But Liya really needs Kai in her life, more than ever because of the loss of her grandmother。 Her grandmother and Kai are basically Lita’s closest confidants and favorite people。Liya’s grandmother brought a lot of Chinese traditions to their part of the world in the United States。 The lantern festival was the biggest。 It’s the festival where everyone wrote their wishes on a lantern and released it into the sky, hoping that their wishes would come try。Most people had no idea that Liya and her grandmother were slyly granting wishes themselves。Now that her grandmother is gone, Liya is trying to keep their tradition alive。Enter Kai。 He reconnects with Liya and offers to help her with the festival and the wish granting。I thought Liya and Kai were very sweet both as characters and as friends (potentially a couple)。 I enjoyed the wish granting。 I loved learning more about Chinese traditions。 I will say this book read a little younger than I was expecting。 Also, the ebook from the library was a bit messed up。 There are drawings in this book and the library ebook actually showed the drawings directly on top of the text, the text was completely covered in some instances。 I don’t know if this is a problem within the Libby app or the ebook itself but I thought it work mentioning in case it could be fixed。This was a sweet book and I thought the idea of making wishes come true yourself was very heartwarming。 。。。more

Thank you Penguin Young Readers, Viking Books, and NetGalley for the advanced electronic review copy of this great book。 This is a feel-good, easy read with elements of Romeo & Juliette-like forbidden romance set in Chinese culture。 I enjoyed learning more about Chinese culture, traditions, and significance of the wishing lanterns。 Would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes Gloria Chao’s other works or just wants a magical, feel good read。
